Biography

Professional Highlights

  • Professor Bellon received an electrical engineering degree from Ecole Superieure d'Electricite (France) in 1984 and a PhD in materials science from University Paris 6 (France) in 1989. He then worked at the Physical Metallurgy Research Section (SRMP) at the CEA Center for Research at Saclay (France) until 1996. He first worked in the MatSE Department at UIUC as a post-doctoral fellow in 1993-1994, and joined the faculty at UIUC in 1996. He received an NSF Career Award in 1998, awards from the Academy for Excellence in Engineering Education (University of Illinois) in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and the Don Burnett Teaching Award in 2000.

Research Statement

My research program is mainly focused on alloys or mixtures submitted to a sustained external forcing: such conditions are often met during either the processing of materials (e.g. by ball-milling or during thin film growth) or during the use of these materials (e.g. during frictional wear or under irradiation). Alloys in such environments have been termed "driven alloys." When the intensity of the forcing is high enough, non-equilibrium phases or microstructures can develop. From a practical point of view, these driving forces can have deleterious effects on the properties of materials: for instance precipitates can be dissolved,leading to a loss of mechanical strength. On the other hand, non-equilibrium processing can provide new routes to synthesizing novel materials: e.g., extended solid solutions or functional nanocomposites can be obtained by processing powders with high-energy ball milling or by processing thin films with energetic ion beams.

The related facet of our research is on the kinetic evolution of alloys during heat treatments. We are taking advantage of the kinetic models developed for driven alloys to study diffusion phenomena and diffusion-controlled reactions such as nucleation, growth and coarsening in complex alloys.

We are performing experiments, atomic computer simulations (kinetic Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics) and analytical modeling of these nonequilibrium alloys. The experiments carried out in our laboratory include ball-milling, wear testing, ion and laser irradiation. Materials are characterized by using the facilities available  at the Materials Research Laboratory. These include SEM, TEM, HRTEM, STEM, APT, nanoindendation, DSC and X-ray diffraction. Computer simulations are run on our cluster of LINUX workstations, and at computation centers on campus.

Abstract

Light-weight, high-strength, aluminum (Al) alloys have widespread industrial applications. However, most commercially available high-strength Al alloys, like AA 7075, are not suitable for additive manufacturing due to their high susceptibility to solidification cracking. In this work, a custom Al alloy Al92Ti2Fe2Co2Ni2 is fabricated by selective laser melting. Heterogeneous nanoscale medium-entropy intermetallic lamella form in the as-printed Al alloy. Macroscale compression tests reveal a combination of high strength, over 700 MPa, and prominent plastic deformability. Micropillar compression tests display significant back stress in all regions, and certain regions have flow stresses exceeding 900 MPa. Post-deformation analyses reveal that, in addition to abundant dislocation activities in Al matrix, complex dislocation structures and stacking faults form in monoclinic Al9Co2 type brittle intermetallics. This study shows that proper introduction of heterogeneous microstructures and nanoscale medium entropy intermetallics offer an alternative solution to the design of ultrastrong, deformable Al alloys via additive manufacturing.

Finite element (FE) simulations were performed to study yielding in single and bilayer (BL) film systems using a “yield zone map” approach. Onset of yielding was observed at the interface, substrate, surface, and film in HfB2/silicon and HfB2/stainless steel systems. The interface yield zone in HfB2/stainless steel system was found to be larger due to the dominant effect of interfacial stress gradients. Based on the FE simulations, empirical equations were derived for the maximum contact pressure required to initiate yield at the interface. For BL/substrate systems, onset of yield at the lower film/substrate interface occurred when film thickness ratio was in the range 0.5–5. The maximum contact pressure associated with the initial yielding at this interface is minimum compared to other locations. From the design point of view, for a BL system the preferable film thickness ratio was found to be 20, whereas the optimum hardness ratio ranges from 2 to 4. For these values, maximum contact pressure is very high (∼30 GPa), and thus, yield onset can be avoided at lower film/substrate interfaces. In addition, based on the obtained results, the advantages and disadvantages of using a BL film as compared to a single film and their relevance to practical applications are discussed.

Recent work indicates that materials with nanoscale architectures, such as nanolayered Cu-Nb composites and nanoscale oxide dispersion-strengthened steels, are both thermally stable and offer improved performance under irradiation. Current understanding of the atomic-level response of such materials to radiation yields insights into how controlling composition, morphology, and interface-defect interactions may further enable atomic-scale design of radiation-tolerant nanostructured composite materials. With greater understanding of irradiation-assisted degradation mechanisms, this bottom-up design approach may pave the way for creating the extreme environment—tolerant structural materials needed to meet the world's clean energy demand by expanding use of advanced fission and future fusion power.

Theoretical predictions indicate that ordered alloys can spontaneously develop a steady-state nanoscale microstructure when irradiated with energetic particles. This behavior derives from a dynamical competition between disordering in cascades and thermally activated reordering, which leads to self-organization of the chemical order parameter. We test this possibility by combining molecular dynamics (MD) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations. We first generate realistic distributions of disordered zones for Ni3Al irradiated with 70 keV He and 1 MeV Kr ions using MD and then input this data into KMC to obtain predictions of steady state microstructures as a function of the irradiation flux. Nanoscale patterning is observed for Kr ion irradiations but not for He ion irradiations. We illustrate, moreover, using image simulations of these KMC microstructures, that high-resolution transmission electron microscopy can be employed to identify nanoscale patterning. Finally, we indicate how this method could be used to synthesize functional thin films, with potential for magnetic applications.

Recent theoretical results indicate that ion-beam mixing can be used to synthesize nanocomposite structures from immiscible elements, relying on a self-organization phenomenon at steady state under irradiation. According to this modeling, self organization requires that the range of the forced atomic relocations in displacement cascades exceeds a critical value. Experimental evidence supporting the formation of nanocomposites by this mechanism has been found in the immiscible system Ag–Cu irradiated with 1 MeV Kr ions. To address this experimentally relevant model system, and to test the theoretical predictions, we study, by molecular dynamics (MD), the characteristics of irradiation mixing in a Ag–Cu alloy subjected to bombardment with 62 keV He, 270 keV Ne, 500 keV Ar, and 1 MeV Kr ions. The distribution of atomic relocations measured by MD is then used to perform lattice kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations of phase evolution, during which both thermal decomposition and irradiation mixing operate simultaneously. The KMC results show that, in the framework of this self-organization mechanism, a nanocomposite structure can be stabilized at steady state by irradiation with heavy ions (Ne, Ar, and Kr), but not with He ions. As the characteristic relocation range for He ions is half of that measured for the heavy ions, these results support the theoretical prediction of the existence of a critical relocation range for compositional patterning to take place under irradiation.

We perform an investigation of ion-beam mixing in the immiscible system Ag–Cu based on cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. Multilayered samples consisting of ten periods of (6.7 nm Cu/11.2 nm Ag) are irradiated at temperatures ranging from 25 to 225 °C with normally incident 1 MeV Kr ions to doses in the range 1–2×1016 ion/cm2, enough to reach a nonequilibrium dynamical steady state. Regardless of the irradiation temperature, extensive grain growth takes place. At intermediate temperatures, competition between thermal decomposition and irradiation mixing results in a nanometer-scale phase separation. This spontaneous decomposition demonstrates that ion-beam mixing can be used as a processing tool to synthesize nanocomposite materials.

Among the many point defects in crystalline solids, antisite defects play a key role in the stability of intermetallics. Such defects are either thermal equilibrium defects or are introduced by some external forcing.

There are, indeed, many examples where intermetallics or compound semiconductors are “driven,” i.e., sustained in nonequilibrium configurations by external forcing. Good examples include the following:

∎ Intermetallics in alloys under irradiation, like FeZr2 in Zircalloy used as a cladding material in pressurized water nuclear reactors, or any of the compounds produced by ion implantation or ion beam mixing (atoms are continuously forced to change lattice sites because of replacement collsions). See, for example, Reference 1.

∎ Intermetallics in superalloys under cyclic fatigue (γ′ precipitates in persistent slip bands undergo sustained shearing, and sometimes redissolves).

∎ Intermetallics during high-energy ball milling, a promising technique to stabilize nonequilibrium phases.

∎ Ordered compounds when formed by vapor phase deposition.

In such compounds, atoms are forced to leave their optimum local surroundings by nuclear collisions, shearing, fracturing, and welding respectively, or land on a surface at a random position, while thermal jumps tend to restore some degree of local atomic order. For simplicity, we call such compounds “driven systems” or “driven intermetallics.” Indeed, such systems are driven away from the usual thermodynamic equilibrium by a permanent dynamical forcing (nuclear collisions, plastic shear, etc.).

The effect of substrate misorientation on {111} ordering in GaxIn1−xP epilayers grown on (001) GaAs substrates by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Among the four possible variants, only the { 1/2   1/2   1/2 }B are observed, and the substrate misorientation toward (11̄0) can disymmetrize the two B variants to a point such that only one remains. We show that the diffuse intensity observed along (001) originates from a modulation of the degree of order. When the domain size is comparable to the characteristic length of the modulation, domain boundaries and antiphase boundaries contribute to the diffuse scattering, giving rise to the reported wavy diffuse intensity. We propose a few simple rules controlling the growth process at the atomistic level, from which the absence of the { 1/2   1/2   1/2 }A variants, as well as the selection effect of the [11̄0] steps on the two remaining variants may be explained. From existing literature, the validity of these rules seems to be rather general. Finally, considering reports that the ordered structure observed here is not at equilibrium, we suggest that the latter is growth induced. The necessary conditions for such an ordering mechanism to operate are identified.

GaInP films grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy on GaAs substrates are observed by transmission electron microscopy in cross sections. A 1/2 (111) (CuPt type) ordering is observed, for the first time in this system, with only two orientation variants occurring. A layered structure (layer thickness 2 nm) develops parallel to the substrate and extra diffuse scattering is also observed at 2/9 (220). The observation of the 1/2 (111) ordering is not predicted by the current first-principle phase diagram calculations. Substrate effects on the orientation and number of ordering variants are identified.
