Biography

Dr. Ryan Chesser is a postdoctoral researcher in the Nuclear and Extreme Environments Measurement (NEEM) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Chesser currently focuses on thermophysical property determination of various fluoride and chloride salt systems related to the Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) campaign. This work involves a rolling ball technique for viscosity measurements and a variable gap technique for thermal conductivity. Additionally, Dr. Chesser is involved in the development and maintenance of the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database (MSTDB).

His dissertation research involved developing and conducting high-temperature nuclear reactor experiments to characterize the response of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices to coupled extremes. Dr. Chesser also participated in optical fiber work involving superheated steam treatment to disrupt multimode optical transmission in sapphire fibers. Prior to this work, Dr. Chesser performed electrochemical techniques on molten fluoride salt systems to aid in the development of mitigation strategies for impurities and contamination during molten salt reactor operation.

Dr. Chesser is always seeking future funding opportunities and collaborative research efforts.
