NSUF Partner Institutions

The behavior of fuels and materials in a nuclear reactor environment is extremely complex and provides a rich field for scientific investigation. NSUF Partner Institutions offer world-class capabilities to researchers investigating this complex behavior.

Post Irradiation Examination
  • Post irradiation examination (PIE) facilities characterize fuel and materials after they've been irradiated, using techniques from optical and electron microscopy to mechanical testing and chemical analysis. These labs range from university characterization suites to large national-lab facilities capable of handling highly radioactive specimens with remote and shielded equipment. PIE work is where researchers connect what happened during irradiation to how a material's properties actually changed.
